KHAJURAHO
A temples complex Khajuraho situated in the heart of the
most northern part of the state Madhya Pradesh is famous for its splendid temples. These
temples with outstanding sculptures embellished in stone were built during the reign of
the Chandela dynasty. This small town in the heart of Madhya Pradesh is also famous for
its legendary Khajuraho dance festival.
The temples of Khajuraho
are dedicated to Gods and goddesses like Shiva, Jagadamba and Vishnu . These temples from
the 10th century form a closed architectural unit with outstanding sculptural
art and architecture. These temples are known to the outside world only for their erotic
sculptures. On the contrary these sculptures reflect mainly the life of that time in all
its moods, and the deep religious faith of these people. Some of these temples are already
thousand years old, while some will celebrate this birthday next year.
The year 1999 was celebrated as the silver-jubilee of the dance-festival of Khajuraho. Artists and
dancers celebrated this year with self composed Dance and Music
pieces specifically created for this occasion. A new music festival on
the design of the dance festival was organized in October and is turned into an
annual tradition. Events such as, a film-festival, seminars related to art, an
international sculptor meet, a theater performance on Khajuraho are only a few to mention
from the many events planned.
The
Khajuraho Festival of Dances draws the best classical dancers in the
country who perform against the spectacular backdrop of the floodlit
temples every year in February/March.

sun becomes an exquisite backdrop for the performers.
In a setting where the earthly and the divine create perfect
harmony
- an event that celebrates the pure magic of the rich classical dance
traditions of India. As dusk falls, the temples are lit up in a soft,
